–It will cost a little bit more to feed students in the Algona Community School District this year after the school board set meal prices during their meeting Monday night. Superintendent Joe Carter says the district has to charge enough to cover the actual production costs to comply with the federal Paid Lunch Equity regulation.
The district will raise meal prices this coming year by 15-cents for both breakfast and lunch.
Taher Food Service is the company in charge of providing the district’s meals, and Carter says they are working with them to increase the number of kids who purchase school lunch.
Carter told the board that the district’s nutrition account has seen drops in recent years, but it has never registered a negative balance.
