–The Water’s Edge Nature Center is teaming up with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) on a project to reduce the nutrients entering Smith Lake through storm runoff. Kossuth County Conservation Chairman Kendall Stumme tells KLGA News that they are receiving grant funding from IDALS to help with their efforts.
Stumme says the creation of the Bioretention Cell is part of a Water Quality Initiative that is a priority for the state’s Ag Department.
Stumme says the Bioretention Cell will serve multiple purposes at the nature center.
He says they knew when they decided to pave the parking lot at the Nature Center that they would need to do something about the runoff.
The Bioretention Cell project is receiving a $24,000 state grant to help offset costs. IDALS announced the award this week, as one of 14 projects across the state to receive funding, with awards totaling over $3.6 Million.
