–Firefighters in Hancock County worked for nearly six hours late Monday night and early Tuesday morning to contain a field fire just north of US Highway 18.
According to the Britt Fire Department, a fire was reported at the Eagle Lake State Game Management Area around 8:40 PM Monday. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered the fire was in an unreachable part of the game management area.
At that point, firefighters from Garner and Crystal Lake were called to help conduct a controlled backburn to protect properties along the western side of the game management area. When the backburn was completed, the main fire was left to burn itself out. Firefighters remained on scene until 2:30 AM Tuesday to monitor the situation.
No structures were lost, and the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.
Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Hancock County Secondary Road’s Department.
