–Over 100 area veterans will cap off their Memorial Day weekend with a trip to the nation’s capital, as the latest Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight will leave early Tuesday morning. John Hyink serves on the Board of Directors for the honor flight, and he tells KLGA News the plane will leave Fort Dodge around 5 AM on May 26th.
Hyink says most of the Veteran’s on this flight served during the war in Vietnam.
One of the biggest tasks the board undertakes is raising funds for each flight.
A number of factors will determine whether Brushy Creek can offer another flight this year.
Each Veteran on the trip is assigned a guardian, someone that will help them navigate the sites in Washington D.C. if they need assistance. Hyink says the vets will get back to Fort Dodge around 9 PM on the 26th, and he encourages area residents to greet them at the airport following the trip. If you would like to help cover the costs of an Honor Flight, you can contact the Brushy Creek organization by calling 515-573-9350 or via email brushycreekareahonorflight@gmail.com.
