The Algona School Board approved a long-term suspension for a High School student during their meeting Monday night.
The board went into closed session at the end of their meeting to discuss the matter in further detail, and after coming back into open session, approved the suspension unanimously. The long-term suspension was defined as longer than 10-days.
Superintendent Joe Carter confirmed the suspension is connected to a security threat that was reported to parents back on February 1st.
The communication that was sent to parents at that time, stated that some students had overheard a conversation that concerned them about the safety of the High School, and reported the matter to school officials.
The issue was investigated by administrators in collaboration with the Algona Police Department, and was dealt with accordingly.
The board did note that the student’s family will have the option to appeal the long-term suspension.
