Spencer Man Charged After Collision with Law Enforcement in Pocahontas County

A Spencer man is accused of hitting two patrol cars while officers were assisting with a fatal accident in the Pocahontas County town of Laurens Friday evening.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, troopers were responding to an unrelated single-vehicle crash in Laurens shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday that claimed the life of an unidentified individual.

As troopers were assisting at that scene, a motorist struck 2 separate vehicles belonging to the Iowa State Patrol and the Laurens Police Department before attempting to flee.

The suspect was tracked down a short time later by Pocahontas Police traveling on Highway 10 and stop sticks were deployed to stop his vehicle. The incident report states the driver revved the engine until the vehicle caught on fire, and then fled on foot before being taken into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Ricky Burnett of Spencer, who was taken into custody on multiple charges.

Law Enforcement officials have not released information about the fatal crash that they were investigating when this incident took place.
