–An unidentified suspect was able to escape capture following a high-speed chase through parts of Humboldt and Pocahontas Counties early this morning.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, a Deputy on routine patrol spotted a 2012 Chevy 3500 Flatbed truck traveling westbound on Iowa Highway 3 that was driving erratically and making unsafe passes around 6:10 AM Tuesday. The Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated and fled.

The pursuit traveled into Pocahontas County, where the suspect eventually turned south into a farm field near the intersection with Highway 3 and County Road N65, about 5 miles west of Gilmore City. The truck continued to travel through the corn and bean field before becoming stuck in a dredge ditch. At this time, the suspect fled the vehicle and ran into a nearby cornfield.

A perimeter was established, and drones were brought in to aid with the search, but Deputies were unable to locate the suspect due to thick crop cover. The truck was eventually removed from the field, and evidence collected inside of it will be sent to the DCI Crime Lab in Ankeny for further testing. Law Enforcement officials eventually learned the truck had been reported stolen in Story County.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Sheriff’s Deputies from Pocahontas, Palo Alto, Calhoun and Webster Counties, along with the Pocahontas Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
