–The man convicted of shooting and killing Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram in September of 2023 received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole Wednesday morning in Kossuth County District Court. 44-year-old Kyle Lou Ricke was found guilty of 1st Degree Murder following a four-day trial in Dickinson County last month. Prior to receiving his sentence, Ricke was given the opportunity to address the court.

Assistant Attorney General Scott Brown prosecuted the case for the state of Iowa. He addressed the court during the hearing, stating that Ricke earned the mandatory sentence of life with no parole.

The defense submitted a handful of letters on Ricke’s behalf, asking the court for some leniency. Brown says these letters are simply another example of the defendant trying to avoid the full consequences of his actions on the night of September 13th, 2023.

Several of Officer Cram’s family members read victim impact statements before Judge Nancy Whittenburg handed out the sentence of life without parole. Ricke will be transferred to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale for further processing by the Department of Corrections.
