–The Algona Municipal Airport will close its concrete runway today to begin work on the final phase of an extension project that dates back over a decade. Deputy City Administrator Barb Smith tells KLGA News this phase will add the 240-foot extension on the south end of the runway.
Planning for the project began in 2013 following an FAA Flight Obstruction study that identified US Highway 18 as an obstruction to planes approaching from the north.
Smith says pilots that use the airport will have to decide where they want to land while the work is being completed.
The runway is expected to be closed for around 4 months, depending on the weather. The Federal Aviation Administration and the City of Algona will split the costs of the project, with the FAA covering 90% and the city picking up the rest.
