–A project that will provide faster internet speeds and more reliable communications service to customers of Algona Municipal Utilities is officially underway. AMU General Manager John Bilsten tells KLGA News that the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) project will replace the hybrid fiber coax system that was installed in the early 2000’s, improvements that he says will provide multiple benefits.
Work on the project began last week in the southern part of Algona, and Bilsten says it will move along in three phases.
AMU currently provides fiber service in downtown Algona and some of the surrounding neighborhoods.
Bilsten says customers who subscribe to any of AMU’s communications services do not need to make any changes to receive the fiber service.
As the project progresses, customers may notice workers digging in their yards, and they could experience minor communications outages. The contract requires substantial completion of the project by the summer of 2027, but Bilsten anticipates the work will be done sooner.
