–A Minnesota man is facing a felony charge after allegedly stealing a vehicle and attempting to steal another one in the Bancroft area late last week.
According to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies arrested 40-year-old Michael Douglas Swanson of Rochester, Minnesota just after 7 PM Friday, after he was apprehended in Hamilton County.
A criminal complaint filed in Kossuth County District Court states that a hunter had parked his truck by a field drive in the 1700 block of 370th street, 5 miles east of Bancroft, when he saw a red Chevy Impala approach around 8:45 AM. The driver of the Impala got out of his vehicle and took off in the hunter’s truck, leaving the car behind.
Deputies ran the license plate of the Impala and discovered it was registered to Swanson.
While investigating this incident, Deputies received another report of a second incident with a red Impala. This time, an area man told Deputies he was stopped at the intersection of 360th Street and 185th Avenue, when a red Impala approached at a high rate of speed and then stopped suddenly. The driver of the Impala, later identified as Swanson, got out and attempted to force the driver from his vehicle. After a struggle, the driver was able to get away from Swanson and call authorities.
Swanson was eventually located in Hamilton County, driving the truck taken from the rural address near Bancroft. He was arrested and charged with Attempted Burglary 2nd Degree, a Class D Felony, and Operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
He was booked into the Kossuth County Jail to await an initial court appearance and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing in Kossuth County District on Tuesday, November 4th.
