–Research from Iowa State University aims to help swine producers increase their bottom line without creating more work in the barn. Jackson Sterle is a Graduate Research Assistant at ISU and a member of their SwinalytIQ team, and he recently published work on Nursery Mortality. Sterle tells KLGA News their research is geared towards preventing problems before they begin.

The SwinalytIQ team partnered with Dr. Gustavo Silva at Iowa State and Dr. Dr. Mafalda Mil-Homens at the University of Barcelona in Spain to use data that producers already collect to create an early warning system.

Sterle says even minor reductions in Nursery Mortality can have a tremendous boost to a producer’s income.

Collecting data like weekly mortality rates, feed intake, and water consumption can create an early warning system.

Sterle says the ultimate goal is to help producers see problems before they can manifest into something bigger.
