–A scholarship that was created to honor the legacy of longtime Supervisor and State Legislator Delores Mertz will hold a fundraising event this weekend. Brenda Bormann is one of the organizers of the event and helps distribute the new scholarship, which is available to any graduating senior in Kossuth County.
Scholarship recipients will receive the $500 award at the beginning of their second semester at college. While the scholarship is being awarded and administered by local Democrats, Bormann says any student can apply, regardless of their political affiliations.
The fundraising event will be held at the former Berl Priebe residence, at 2106 100th Avenue, just west of Algona near the Municipal Airport.
The scholarship fundraiser will be held Sunday, July 9th from 5-7 PM. Mertz, who passed away in October of 2022, served as a Supervisor in Kossuth County before serving in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1989 to 2011.
