A fund has been set up to help cover medical expenses for a five-year-old girl who was struck by an S-U-V while she was riding her bike in Ruthven Sunday night.

The hit-and-run happened Sunday night and the girl, identified as Mackenzie Puterbaugh, was flown to a hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mackenzie’s Aunt, Tricia Semple provided information on her condition this week, and says the child had a punctured lung and internal bruising and doctors were concerned about a head injury.

A “Benefit for MacKenzie” account has been established at Iowa State Bank in Ruthven. The family says all proceeds will go towards medical bills and care for the Mackenzie now that she has been released from the hospital.

22-year-old Laticia Whiting of Estherville has been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, driving on the wrong side of the road and having an open container of alcohol in connection with the incident. She was taken into custody Sunday after her vehicle was located in Spirit Lake.
