–Local Democrats are voicing frustrations after multiple political signs were stolen or vandalized over the weekend in and around Algona.

The Algona Police Department received a report Sunday morning just after 7:30 AM of multiple thefts of Harris/Walz 2024 signs from yards in town.

A social media post from the Kossuth County Democrats estimates more than 50 Harris/Walz 2024 signs were stolen from the Algona area in the late evening hours of September 14th and early morning hours of September 15th.

A press release from the Kossuth County Democrats sent to KLGA reads, “These acts were a crime and will, hopefully, be treated as such by Law Enforcement. Please remember that, regardless of differing views, we are neighbors, Iowans and Americans.”

Since campaign signs must be placed on private property and not within the right of way, intentionally damaging, defacing or destroying those signs without permission is considered criminal mischief. Criminal mischief can be a felony charge if the cost of replacing, repairing or restoring the damaged property exceeds $1,500.
