Forecasters say travel could be difficult if not impossible across Iowa’s northwestern third Wednesday. Blizzard conditions are in the forecast for some 30 counties with winds gusting up to 65 miles an hour and heavy snow of up to twelve inches in some areas. National Weather Service meteorologist Alexis Jimenez says the storm front will start moving into Iowa late tonight and early tomorrow.
A major temperature shift is coming to the region, as highs today are forecast mostly in the 60s and 70s across Iowa, but the approaching storm system will bring in very cold air.
Some areas may see snowfall at the rate of two inches per hour.
The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement Tuesday in partnership with Kossuth County Emergency Management:
“The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office and Kossuth County Emergency Management Agency are asking citizens to be mindful of the upcoming weather on Wednesday, March 19th, which is predicted to be the worst from 6 AM to 6 PM.
Conditions could deteriorate rapidly with heavy snowfall and high winds. A travel advisory will be in effect during this time and may change to a travel ban as road visibility conditions worsen tomorrow morning.
First Responders may not be able to respond due to the conditions so please plan ahead by delaying any unnecessary travel during this timeframe. Updates will be posted on our Facebook page and on KLGA radio.”
