–The Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge will open its auto tour route this weekend as the primary nesting season comes to an end. Refuge Manager Ed Meendering tells KLGA News that despite the warm and dry conditions, there’s plenty of wildlife to be seen.

A bird that returned to northern Iowa within the last decade can be seen again along the 4.5-mile route.

Along with all the migratory birds, Meendering says they have seen a return of other wildlife, like River Otters.

Meendering says a change they made last year helped increase the number of visitors they saw this spring.

The auto tour begins at the Union Slough headquarters, located along Kossuth County Road A42, six miles east of Bancroft. The tour route will be open sunrise to sunset, beginning August 1st and running through September 21st. Visitors are reminded that wildlife is usually more active during the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are generally cooler.
