–Jury selection will begin this morning in Dickinson County as the 1st Degree Murder trial of Kyle Lou Ricke is scheduled to get underway.
The 43-year-old is accused of killing Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram on the night of September 13th of 2023.
The trial had been scheduled to start on June 25th, but the record flooding in NW Iowa just prior to that date caused Judge Nancy Whittenburg to order a continuance in the case. The concern at the time was that potential jurors may not be able to focus on the facts of the case while worrying about possible damage to their homes or businesses. Travel was also an issue at that time, as the flooding closed many of the major roads between Kossuth County and Spirit Lake.
Jury selection will begin at 9AM. Prosecutors mentioned during a hearing in late June that if they can get the jury seated in a timely manner, the trial should last 2-3 days.
