–Authorities in South Dakota have filed charges against an Algona woman for allegedly stealing close to $1.8 Million while working for that state’s Department of Social Services.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced the indictment Thursday morning against 68-year-old Lonna Carroll, who is facing two felony counts of aggravated grand theft. Jackley says this investigation began in February after employees within the South Dakota Department of Social Services noticed suspicious financial activity.

Carroll is accused of taking the money between 2010 and March of 2023, when she retired from the department. Jackley told reporters that Carroll was in a position where she could both request and approve funds in her office, and allegedly took money that was requested for foster care and other childcare services and deposited it into a personal bank account.

An initial court appearance for Carroll has not been set in Hughes County Circuit Court in Pierre. She could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
