Armstrong Man Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash on Highway 9

–An Armstrong man was killed in a 2-vehicle crash along Iowa Highway 9 in rural Emmet County Friday evening.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 41-year-old John James Bumgart was killed when his 1996 GMC truck collided with a 2020 Peterbilt Semi, driven by 50-year-old Karie Marie Eisma of Hawarden, Iowa.

The accident report states that Bumgart was traveling west on Highway 9 just after 6:30 PM Friday when his vehicle crossed the centerline 2 miles east of Estherville and struck the semi. Bumgart’s truck entered the north ditch, while the semi ended up in the south ditch before catching fire.

Bumgart was pronounced dead at the scene while Eisma was transported by EMS personnel to Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

The accident remains under investigation.
